Smoky the Cat
It is September of 2024 and LA Tech University is celebrating Banned Book Week. I go to the Shakespeare garden to listen to students and faculty read from banned books and bring one of my own to read.
(Here at No. 9 Books and Records we are committed to the fight against the censorship of literature. We believe adults should be able to check out or purchase literary works of art without interference from the government.)
On the way back from this excellent and moving event, I heard a small meow in the parking lot. It was coming from inside of a parked car. I was having a lot of trouble coaxing the kitten out of the car until a girl in the parking lot suggested we play mother cat sounds on the phone.
That got her attention! She emerged from under the car, but would run away whenever we got too close. After much hide and seek mixed with chasing, she was cornered at the business building and scooped up.
Unfortunately, no one who helped in the rescue could take her so I brought her to No. 9. She has been here ever since.
